about

Absence is a meditation on the passage of time. More precisely how time changes music tastes and perception. The EP is 15 years in the making, and has evolved considerably since its first production in 2008.

It was around then that Patrick, founder of Fina Stampa, met Yama, the artist behind odoma, in Tokyo. Yama gave Patrick a CD full of unreleased tracks called “Absence” that Patrick found himself playing repeatedly when back to New York.

At the time, Patrick was playing drums in a psych rock trio and DJing his monthly “Friday Deep” warehouse party in Brooklyn. The sounds on Absence cut deep. They somehow connected dots from legendary all nighters at Tokyo’s Club Yellow (RIP) to the long journey home the next morning through the city's labyrinthine alleyways and train rides. There were clear nods to the more experimental end of Kompakt Record's legendary Immer mix and ambient techno of the mid aughts.

Despite it sounding like it could have come from one of the top German or Japanese imprints of the time, Absence had a raw, made-in-a-home-studio sound. You can almost imagine Yama vibing through the night in his apartment somewhere in Tokyo.

However, as the years went on, Patrick and Yama fell out of touch after many moves across the country (for Patrick) and across the world (for Yama). Flash forward to 2022, and Covid happened. On a whim, Patrick got back in touch with Yama, and asked if he'd be interested in releasing some of the tracks on Absence.

And alas, here we are.

In Japanese the word "natsukashi"’ means nostalgia, or longing. In the case of Absence, the longing is for the era of mid-2000s experimental electronic music, when glitch techno, ambient, and experimental dub were budding, countervailing forces. Post-Napster, Pre-Spotify, and when lots of DJs still played vinyl.

It’s also a longing for a simpler time pre-Covid, before “EDM” and stadium techno. It was then that this sound felt real, raw, and just coming into existence.
